There can be no doubt about Marilyn Nelson's versatility in view of her latest titles (I'm not familiar with her earlier ones), but her CARVER, a life in poems, a biography in poetry (I don't shy away from being redundant) grips with specific on target historical significance. Her ability to isolate intimate events in the past to feature her subject's character and those he interacted with through a lifetime is rivetting.
There's an extra dimension, a power not available in prose--or so it seems to me--and I presume the same is true of her more recent titles as well.
