Elliott batTzedek and Norma Jean Sawicki both bring up interesting points in their discussions of the CSK books this year. Sharon Flake's WHO AM I WITHOUT HIM?, a CSK honor book in 2005, was proudly published by Jump at the Sun, an imprint dedicated to African-American books and readers of all cultures . I am lucky enough to be the publishing inheritor of this imprint, founded by Andrea Davis Pinkney here at Hyperion some five years ago.
Jaira Placide is our new Jump at the Sun editor, and along with the staff of Hyperion, she is picking up the mantle that Andrea Davis Pinkney and Garen Thomas put in place at Jump at the Sun to nurture our current authors and illustrators, and to find talented new ones. Andrea and Garen and Jaira are all women of color. But to Norma Jean's point: they are not the only ones who contribute to the JATS list. CSK winner MARTIN'S BIG WORDS was edited by Maureen Sullivan, whose heritage is as Irish as her name. Many of our most important African-American writers and artists were discovered and nurtured by people of other races. And something else to consider: It's not just an editor who makes a book at a publishing house. It's a designer. It's a marketing director. A visionary publisher or president. It's publicity people and production people and finance people. They are all vital parts of the process. And there is not a very even distribution of people of color in publishing, even in 2005.
I do think times are changing, and that children's publishing is becoming more diverse every day. It has to, or it will be left behind. We established Jump at the Sun to publish and promote books about African-American culture to the widest possible audience. Other houses do it differently. The CSK Award helps every publisher and imprint get these books the attention they deserve.
