It's a shame that Brian Selznick and Nic Bishop don't get the level of recognition that the authors of their books receive. >>
It really is! I heard Selznick speak a while back at the Graphic Artists Guild, where he talked about his book process. It sounds like he plays a LARGE role in shaping the books he illustrates. He is also a big stickler for accuracy. He showed the small group two illustrations for Walt Whitman--both a man working at a printing press. The first illustration was gorgeous ... so I was surprised when Selznick said that he repainted the whole thing because the picture was slightly inaccurate to the time period--probably one person in the whole country would notice!
Illustrators of nonfiction deserve recognition too! It's definitely hard work.
