Caldecott 2005

In addition to the previous sensitive comments expressed on this listserve, I'd like to add two more points about Coming On Home Soon. I appreciate the northern setting for this African-American family - even though I am in the Deep South, I like to show my students diversity in settings. This is a nice counterpoint to the Southern landscape of The Other Side. The snowy, cold atmosphere is the perfect contrast for the warmth of the home and family. The other aspect of the book I love is the continuing presence of the kitten, who quickly becomes fat and lively as he too drinks in the love and substenance of the home. A truly extraordinary addition to our Caldecott history!
