Wow, indeed. This is a book that sticks with you. Years ago, when ON THE BEACH first came out, there was a wave of surviving-a-total-war books, all of which I read eagerly. While they are not so common, any more, I have continued to read the ones that were published for younger readers. This is certainly the best of the lot, and it has so much more. The edgy love interest adds to the discomfort of the experience for the US reader, and the excitement and consuming nature of that first love is beautifully portrayed. Meg Rosoff has thought through the situation carefully, and gets the survival details right. The ending is perfect. What more can I say...
