Thank you to everyone who contributed to the discussion of the 2005 Caldecott Award books!
It's now time to begin the discussion of the 2005 Newbery Award winner and honor books:
Winner: Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata. Atheneum, 2004.
Honor Books:
Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko. Putnam, 2004. The Voice That Challenged a Nation: Marian Anderson and the Struggle for Equal Rights
by Russell Freedman. Clarion, 2004. Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy by Gary D. Schmidt. Clarion, 2004.
We welcome your thoughts about these books, as well as any questions you have about the how the Newbery Award committee works. For a listing of the Newbery terms and criteria, go to
Like all ALA children's literature award committees, the deliberations of the Newbery Committee are confidential. But committee members can speak about the process in general and the committee's appreciation of the titles recognized. I know that some 2005 Newbery Committee members, including chair Susan Faust, are CCBC-Net subscribers (I also had the honor of serving on the 2005 committee). So this is a great chance for you to ask questions if you've wondered about how the award process works in general, as well sharing your own responses to and experiences with the 2005 Newbery titles.
