I too loved this book, and what I really drew me in was the voice. I don't have the book in front of me, but from the first moment, the heroine was very real to me, and I was interested in her, and wanted to find out what happened next.
Also I liked the creation of the contemporary wartime scene which grew mainly out of a lack of communication, phones and e-mail and so forth going down, so no one knew where (or how) family and friends were, if they didn't live together.
