Thank you to everyone who spoke up with varying opinions about this year's Newbery Award winner and honor books.
February is rapidly rushing to a close, and we now need to turn our attention to the 2005 Printz Award winner and honor books. The Printz Award recognizes literary excellence in young adult literature. For additional information on the Printz Award, go to:
2005 YALSA Michael L. Printz Award (literary excellence in young adult literature)
Winner: How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff. Wendy Lamb Books / Random House, 2004.
2005 YALSA Michael L. Printz Award Honor Books
Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. Eos / HarperCollins, 2004.
Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy by Gary D. Schmidt. Clarion, 2004.
Chanda's Secrets by Allan Stratton. Annick Press, 2004.
I'll begin by stating that when I first read How I Live Now this past summer, after it was recommended to me by someone I was speaking with at the American Library Association Annual Conference, my response was simply "Wow" (the only word to break my otherwise awed silence). Since that time, I've come up with many more articulate thoughts about the book, but I keep coming back to that one word.
