I couldn't agree more with Stephen Engelfried's message below; except that this book was my absolute favorite of the year. It was so real that I could feel the cold and the lonliness of a little girl missing her mother, even though she was in a loving and safe surrounding. The facial expression, the body poses of the characters, the warmth of the kitchen, all are right and are transmitted perfectly to the reader or listener. It has all the feeling of a Willy Nelson sung lyric. And just as Willy can put more feeling into a word than anyone else without ever milking it or turning melodramatic, so do Woodson's words and Lewis' pictures combine to do the same. The child's feelings for her mother still come out strong and enduring but, oh so gently, beautiful.

It is the finest of art and the best of literature.
