HILN

Ginny raised the question of the capitalization in the title of HILN. I first read ?how I live now? thinking the title was all lower case letters
(my computer won?t let me do this in email). And that made an impact on me in the voice and symbolism with the egocentric world of the young girl changing from ?I? to lower case ?I? (which my email still won?t let me do). Finished copy shows the jacket art with lower case letters, but (I believe; I don?t have a finished copy of the book) on the back flap a different spelling. Just to add to the confusion. I believe it?s done four ways on different ALA websites: Normal Caps, all lower case, all lower case but a capital I, and all lower case but a capital H for How.

In our press releases the Printz committee made a point of indicating what we thought was the ?proper? capitalization, but somehow that didn?t stay consistent from announcement to announcement (I suspect word processing programs were the villain). But, like you, Ginny, after grading a million student papers and insisting on proper attribution and pronunciation, the variants jump out at me whenever I see them ? which seems to be whenever I type the title in email!
