Newbery Discussion

Dear Net Community,

This is my first foray into a discussion and I'm jumping in with both feet. In December, I read AL CAPONE..., THE VOICE THAT CHALLENGED..., and LIZZIE BRIGHT... I started KIRA-KIRA, but it wasn't working for me,so, with reading time being a precious commodity, I moved on. After the award announcements, I did go back to reread and finish it. And still, the magic was not there. As a reader, I was bothered throughout the book by Katie's abrupt shift of ideas and/or observations.

For me, the most stunning, beautifully-written story of the year was LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY. I simply could not bear to stop reading. The compelling story, the beautiful, lyrical language, and the depth of characterization lingered with me long after the last page. I was carrying the banner for this book and was quite pleased that it was recognized. Gary Schmidt is a most deserving author.

I also enjoyed the other Honor books. So, for whatever it is worth, here's another take on the Newberys.
