An interesting and thought provoking article which was surely well intended, the definition of "Young Adult Literature" as "easy-to-read, short novels about teenagers and problems such as drug addiction, teenage pregnancy, alcoholism, domestic violence, divorced parents and bullying" is highly oversimplified, shows a real ignorance of good quality YA literature, and is highly offensive to me. >>
Hear, hear! I cringed when I read that part of the article -- but I do agree that the article is thought provoking. I guess, though, that its author hasn't heard about the recent efforts on the part of publishers and at least one YA author (I'm embarrassed I don't remember his name!) to encourage boys to read. But we do need to do more of that; despite the fact that there are indeed excellent YAs featuring boys, I suspect it's true that many boys need to be encouraged more vigorously to discover them.
