I couldn't agree with Brenda more! Judy Blume's books have done a lot to demystify puberty and sex for kids than many well-meanining health classes, and has helped kids be a little less self-conscious and embarrassed about the changes in their bodies and their interests as they mature physically and sexually.
She's not a particularly "literary" writer, but surely there's room in the canon for works that speak to kids in ways that kids can easily understand and relate to. Judy Blume has also worked tirelessly against bannings of children's books and has done a great deal to educate people both in and out of children's books about its dangers. I've always thought it sad that her work has been so discounted by many in our field, and I'm delighted that the Nat'l Book Award folks honored her as they did.
