The ILS Newbery Committee met on Wednesday, January 12 to select their annual mock Newbery Medal and Honor books. Seventeen 6-8 grade members (and 2 voting, adult supervisors) selected the following:

Newbery Medal The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer

Newbery Honors Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett Messenger by Lois Lowry The Teacher's Funeral by Richard Peck

The Sea of Trolls won 17 of 19 first place votes. I had to remind the students of how they absolutely did not want to select this book because of it's size. With only a month before our final meeting they finally decided to add it to the list of books to consider after one student read it on her own and a couple others started a movement to get it included.
