Just to be sure everyone is aware that David Almond is British and thus his books are not eligible for Newbery and that poetry and folklore are excluded from Sibert.
from Dean Schneider:
I'll second Kathy Isaacs' comment, that "not winning an award is no more indicative of a 'fatal flaw' than not being valedictorian...." I thought most of the awards were solid choices, but that doesn't mean all of my personal favorites were picked. I thought David Almond's The Fire?ters, Walter Dean Myers' Here in Harlem, and Nancy Farmer's The Sea of Trolls were truly outstanding works; not getting awards doesn't diminish them at all in my eyes. I recommend other lists, too, such as Book Links magazine's "Lasting Connections" in the January issue, a list of 30 or so excellent books, some that won major awards, many that didn't.
