Hello,

I almost wrote in when I read that KIRA KIRA was one of the books that was being discussed for some of the mock Newbery Awards. But since I hadn't read most of the other books, I hesitated to make any comments. I am thrilled that it won! I read it a while ago, loved it, and recommended it to a friend as a wonderful book for adults to read. The voice is distinct, the time and place are clearly described, and the family dynamics are portrayed so realistically. The story is sad but has a thread of quirky humor. Congratulations to Cynthia Kadohata!
