I absolutely have to echo Maia's praise of Birdland! It was one of my favorite novels of 2003 and remains one of my favorite books about the experience of loss and the questions it raises -- religious or otherwise.

  I know it is now December (oh my), but I have one last November-religious suggestion, which I just finished this morning: Tracy Mack's Birdland. Themes of faith are nestled neatly within the story of a boy exploring (and documenting) his way through loss.
