Thanks for the honesty, Katie. I hate to admit this but I returned it to the library after reading only a few pages. I vowed I would take it out again and try once more, but the voice in which it was written was almost unintelligible to me. I put this down to a lack on my part and I am willing to pick it up again because I like Curtis's writing and the book has been praised so highly here, but in all honesty, I think I'll need a teenaged translator to read it to me.
As far as favorites of the year -- I love "If Not for the Cat," by Jack Prelutsky, illustrations by Ted Rand, which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet. Knuffle Bunny is inspired, and I think the bright colors of the figures draw attention and smiles from young reader/listeners while the realistic photographed backgrounds give the illustrations a grounding in reality that will appeal to the little ones. In a message tosaid I can imagine kids coming away from the book with the feeling that they just might meet Trixie and Knuffle Bunny on their next trip through city streets.
For middle grades and up, I thoroughly enjoyed Al Capone and Here in Harlem, but I have a list a mile long of books I haven't got around to yet -- and I'm retired (except for writing)! I don't know how you all keep up.
One more thing on an already too long e-mail. If I'm not taking advantage of this service by putting in a plug -- I love to do school visits, so if anyone is looking for a visiting author, please check me out at SallyDerby.com. New book coming out in the spring -- "The Wacky Substitute" from Marshall Cavendish with illustrations by Jennifer Herbert.----- Original Message ----From: "Kaminski Katie" To: "Subscribers of ccbc-net" Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 2004 10:08 AM Subject: Re: [ccbc-net] Favorites; Paterson lecture now available
Did anyone have a hard time with Bucking the Sarge? I'm not sure if I had such high expectations because of The Watsons, but I had to force myself to finish. Gatty's
