My favorite children's chapter book this year has been Rodman Philbrick's The Young Man and the Sea. Philbrick caught my attention with the first line: "'Before I tell you about the biggest fish in the sea and how it tried to kill me and then ended up saving my life, first you got to know about the leaky boat, 'cause it all began right there." And he kept me hooked (pardon the pun) all the way through to the satisfying ending.
My favorite picture book of the year is The Best Pet of All by David LaRochelle and illustrated by Hanako Wakiyama. A delight to read aloud to kids and great retro art with a twist of absurdity.
