I want to add to Norma Jean's response to Pam Turner's question. The ALA/ALSC (Association for Library Services to Children) Notables Children's Books Committee is completely separate from either the Newbery Committee or the Caldecott committee (and other ALA/ALSC childen's book award committees). As Norma Jean explained, the winners of the ALSC children's literature awards (Newbery, Caldecott, Sibert, Batchelder) do end up on the final Notables list. But that is the only formal connection.
The ALSC award committees are independent of one another and of the Notables committee. Unlike the Notables committee, each of the ALA/ALSC award committees works confidentially, so no one outside each of those committees knows what is on their nomination lists.

I was wondering if anyone understands the relationship between the ALA nomination lists for notable children's books and the major awards
(Newbery, Caldecott, etc). I notice the ALA has two notable children's books 2005 nomination/discussion lists, one for discussion at the annual conference in Orlando, and a new one for discussion at the midwinter conference in Boston. Are these two lists, put together, the short list for the final notable list and all the major awards?
