Here's my favorites so far......
Choldenko, Gennifer. Al Capone Does My Shirts The story is fresh and the characters are so believable. Choldenko has created a sense of place that is so real, one can almost imagine being a child in this bizarre world of Alcatraz.
Hannigan, Katherine. Ida B. The language and Ida herself are the stars in this book. I felt Ida's anguish and fears as though they were my own. The author got it just right by leading the reader through Ida's growth as a person. And finally, the book has a good ending - not perfect, not all wrapped up nicely, but realistic.
Lyon, George Ella. Sonny's House of Spies Lyon takes us into Sonny's world and keeps us there till the end. The characters were true and the place came to life. Touching on sensitive subjects without preaching, Lyon makes the reader think.
Schmidt, Gary D. Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy What a great story! Tension throughout, good characters, and a time and place that is believable. Tolerance is the theme, and so many levels of tolerance are portrayed here. Touching and thoughtful.
Favorite Picture book: Willems, Mo. The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog I love the word play and the absurdity of these two birds and their interaction. The simple line of the drawings matches the simple story and the playfulness of the expressions on the bird faces takes the spare text and extends the story. Just pure fun!
