It is often the case that people speculate about an award committee's motives. It has been my experience, however, that committee members take their charge very seriously. The choice of a best book is, nonetheless, a subjective one. I can accept that some might have chosen another book last year. I personally, however, find Mordicai Gerstein's work stunning. His palette, composition, perspective - all are extraordinary. One can argue the aesthetic merits of other books, but I doubt very much that politics had anything to do with the selection of this superb book. Rita Auerbach
