A few of my picture book favorites this year (or at least of the last couple of months--beyond that seems like a very distant memory!).
I LOVE the pigeon-- "The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog" by Mo Willems is probably my favorite this year; I also really like his Knuffle Bunny. I like both the story the creative illustrations.
Actual Size by Steve Jenkins--loved the concept the cut paper collage illustrations. Giving this one for Christmas presents this year--even to my 12-year-old just because I think it's so cool!
Sarah Stewart's The Friend--although Stewart/Small books are always beautiful, I sometimes question their "child-appeal". But I think even though this book is a look at a lifestyle most kids wouldn't be familiar with, they could still relate to B elle her feelings. I love how Small draws Belle--seems like she's in constant motion--and little touches like putting one leg behind the other. And I especially like the last page which is a picture of the grown-up Belle wi th the items that they had collected. My only qualm is that Beatrice is different colors on different spreads--sometimes very dark, sometimes very light.
2 books that probably won't win any awards, but I like them because they are familiar pictures of families : The Most Thankful Thing by Lisa McCourt. The scrapbook look is fitting, and it's neat that the book touches on the mother's life as
she was growing up-?ing editor of the school paper, attending prom, etc.; things that aren't normally part of picture books. And I like Candace Fleming's "This is the Baby" for the simple fact that the baby in the book was my child! I can relate to the chaos the exasperation. Also, its cumulative rhyme and "no-no-no" refrain lend well to storytime.
