Of the several books I've read this year, the one that stands out-?ak and wing over all the rest (limited by what I have read) is: Hoose "The Race to Save the Lord God Bird"* I am as enthusiastic about
as I was last year about the Murphy. It is informative, interesting and gracefully written. Bibliographic essays provide necessary paraphrenalia and other end matter is excellent. I feel about this book as I always feel about Romeo & Juliet: I have so identified that their deaths surprise me and I am infinitely sad. So,too, do I feel about the extinction of these birds. There is always the hope that there might be a mating pair--but at the rate we humans are destroying the world, I am not encouraged.
It's a handsomely produced book. Of course, there will be objection that the plates are not in color--but think of the price should they be.
