Announcing the 2005 $5,000 PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship

ThePEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowshipof $5,000 is offered annually to a North American author of children?s or young?ult fiction. The Fellowship was established in 2001 in order to recognize a writer?s work which is of high literary caliber but has not yet attracted a broad readership. Because an author?s book may not achieve the sales that would allow the writer to support him or herself solely from writing, the Fellowship responds to the need for a measure of financial sustenance?to make possible an extended period of time to complete a book-length work in progress, and to assist a writer at a crucial moment in his or her career when monetary support is particularly needed. In 2001, the honoree was Graham McNamee of Vanouver,British Columbia, author ofHate YouandNothing Wrong with a Three-Legged Dog. In 2002, the honoree was Lori Aurelia Williams, author of WhenKambia Elaine Flew in from Neptune andS hayla?sDouble Brown Baby Blues. In 2003, FrannyBillingsley was honored for her book The Black Mountains, and in 2004 Deborah Wiles received the Fellowship for Love, Ruby Lavender and a forthcoming untitled novel.

The Fellowship was created by an endowment established by PEN member Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, the prolific author of many short stories and more than a hundred books of fiction, includingPatiently Alice, the fifteenth and most recent in the acclaimed ?Alice? series, as well asSang Spell, andShiloh, the first novel in a trilogy, which won the 1992 Newbery Medal. On establishing the Fellowship Mrs. Naylor said: ?We truly work ?blind,? with no assurance whatsoever that anyone will be interested in our final product. It takes enormous stamina and resolve and optimism to live with our characters for a year or more?and it?s my hope that the Working Writer?s Fellowship, modest as it is, will let the author know that an expert panel of PEN judges has faith in the writer, admires his work, and trusts that he will be able to bring to paper what he sees in his head.?

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: A candidate is a writer of children or young adult fiction in financial need, who has published at least two books, and no more than five, during the past ten years, which may have been well reviewed and warmly received by literary critics, but which have not generated sufficient income to support the author.

HOW TO BE NOMINATED: Writers must be nominated by an editor or a fellow writer. It is strongly recommended that the nominator write a letter of support, describing in some detail how the candidate meets the criteria for the Fellowship. Since, in most cases, candidates will be aware that they are being nominated, the nominator should provide the following: a list of the candidate?s published work (preferably accompanied by copies of reviews, where possible) and a description of the candidate?s financial resources, such as a summary of recent earnings, or some articulation of why monetary support is particularly needed at this time (the need for child care, research expenses, etc.). Three copies of no more than seventy-five pages of current work, intended as part of a new book, must be submitted, along with a self?dressed, stamped envelope of a suitable size if the candidate wishes return of manuscripts. The award is judged by a panel of three members of PEN who are authors of children?s or young adult fiction. Deadline: January 17, 2005.
