I adore KING OF THE MIDDLE MARCH for all the reasons Connie mentions.
Please also check out NO SHAME, NO FEAR by Ann Turnbull which has been shortlisted for the Guardian and the Whitbread in England (but hasn't made as much noise over here). Don't know that I can say it any better than the Whitbread judges: "A meticulously researched portrait of English society and Quakerism in 1662, and a memorable love story. With quiet authority and a clever narrative, it deals with issues of loyalty and intolerance and skilfully invites modern parallels."
