I once heard Katherine Paterson speak about the Gilly Hopkins background. After some exposure to the fostering system, she said, she set out to create the best foster parent she could imagine.

 

She succeeded admirably in Mrs. Trotter, who takes her parenting seriously, lovingly, and firmly.

 

She said, someone once asked her who Mrs. Trotter was, and she answered,
"God," and kept on walking.
