Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan is a remarkable book for many reasons: the creation of a community where being gay -- and transgender -- is not only universally accepted, but admired; a gay romance told as a romance, not as a tale of oppression; a multi-layered look at the intensity of teenage friendships; and a comedy with substance. A sub-plot involves a gay boy from the next town over, i.e. not so gay-friendly. He is the son of fundamentalist Christians who respond to their son's sexuality by praying over him a lot. But they don't throw him out and the son doesn't run away -- because they love one another, and that love is stronger than "moral values" or religion. Levithan asks us to question the principles of religion vs real-live relationships, "moral values" vs. loving feelings.
