Virtual Libraries...

I hesitate to throw this out...and find it interesting how our conversation has evolved from its original state of:

"How do young readers choose books? We'll spend the first half of October on CCBC-Net sharing observations and knowledge of how children choose books. How does a child or teen navigate the overwhelming number of options they may face in a library or classroom?

AND...I am anxious for us to move on to discussion of E.L. Konigsburg, BUT...in Alabama we all benefit from the Alabama Virtual Library. This electronic library has brought books in many forms to many people. I wonder if other states have such?
Most likely so if we, in the S-L-O-W to change South, do.

Regards, Clark Underbakke, Ph.D. 2nd Grade Teacher Alabama...where, believe it or not, we don't ALL marry our cousins, HAVE a full set of teeth, AND own at least TWO pairs of shoes...TeeHee!

Our elementary schools are into AR in a major way. I am in a middle school and we do not have AR. I think one of the most telling factors in my assessment of AR is that only once in 10 years have I had a student ask for AR.

Instead we hear the kids say, "You mean we can check out anything we want?" and you mean I can have more than one book?" "We don't have to take any tests?"

We have a very large circulation of books that are largely self-selected for pleasure reading and no one is earning any points or winning any prizes.
