View From Saturday

I love this discussion of Konigsburg. I was a big fan of hers as a child, and am an admirer of her wirting as an adult.

As a child in the seventies, I loved Konigsburg's From the Mixed-up Files. I think the independence of the children, as the earlier poster mentioned, was very appealing to me. But, also, what child hasn't thought of running away? And to do it in such style! The hobo life was not for me. I don't think I ever entered a museum as a child without wondering what it would be like to sleep in one of those grand beds. Or sit on a really old and ornate chair--which is so much more tempting when you are forbidden to do so, of course. So I think the fact that these characters actually got to do what I wanted to do made the book really special for me.

As an adult, however, I have come to admire Konigsburg as a writer. I recently read the View from Saturday, which I had missed as a kid. The way she wove the stories of each character and then brought them together at the end--along with the message of helping one another--was masterful. When I put the book down I was in awe of Konigsburg's technique. And also a little depressed as a writer. Konigsburg sets a high standard!
