Robin Smith" writes: I make a bit deal about reading being the most important homework I give. I don't want reading to be seen as somehow less important than math, writing, and other schoolwork. To me it is the MOST homework of all! In the lower grades kids are to read for homework, but no one seems to pay much attention to it. I do. Perhaps paying attention to kids and what they read is motivating for some?
I'm generally uncomfortable with extrinsic rewards for reading, but then I don't like grades either (and am fortunate in not having to give them).
On another note, I meant to respond to Steven Engendered who wondered how
"word of mouth" worked with kids. He made me remember the fall of 1998 when Harry Potter first came out and basically was passed from one fantasy loving kid to the next. It was very much kid "word of mouth."
