I am really interested in hearing people's opinions on the point value that AR assigns to books. I work for Reading Is Fundamental, so I don't work directly with the children. However, I have read a couple of articles which indicate that point values are assigned based on the length of the book, rather than the content.
We hear from a lot of our program coordinators that kids love taking the AR tests and want them to order books that are on the AR list for RIF distributions. However, a number of us are concerned that the test-taking goes against the "reading is fun" principle behind RIF's programs. We require motivational activities with each distribution and stress that the activities should not be like schoolwork
(e.g., no book reports), but many coordinators seem to think that the AR tests should qualify as motivational activities.
I'm curious to hear what other people think about this.
