It seems to me one of the big question with regard to AR and other reading motivation productions is the long term effects. Yes, kids are reading to get rewards, but is it turning them into lifelong readers? And what message do the black-and-white, right-and-wrong tests send? I understand t is absolutely key to get kids reading, and comprehension is critical. But what about critical thinking? Open-ended questions invite the critical thinking that is such an important aspect of what books offer, and creates truly meaningful literature experiences.
(I like Sue McGown's comment that reading motivation programs are ONE tool/component tht they use.)
I'm curious what research has been/is being done on the long-term impact of reading motivation like AR. I did find one article:
AUTHOR: Linda M. Pavonetti, Kathryn M. Brimmer, James F. Cipielewski TITLE: Accelerated Reader: What are the lasting effects on the reading habits of middle school students exposed to Accelerated Reader in elementary grades? SOURCE: Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy 46 no4 300 D 2002/Ja 2003
