Library Visits...

What a shame to hear it's a challenge for some classes to visit their local public library. I am happy to report that is NOT a challenge in our fair city of Hoover, AL. (A suburb located just south of Birmingham...)

With great success, my kindergarten teaching friend and I took our classes to our local library last year. Our classes were in the midst of research and the time seemed right for the trip. Even in our suburban setting, we were both shocked at how many of our students had NOT visited our critically acclaimed library. One student stating, "Oh!? We drive past here on the way to ball practice!" as we drove up.

The library staff could not have been more helpful and excited about our visit. The kids loved the tour and many have continued to visit the library with their families. The kindergarten is now in first grade, the first graders have moved up to me in second grade and plans for another trip to the library are in the works. A favorite field trip proving the point that children are more interested in their immediate environment than they are the rain forest, the arctic, etc.

field there!

Yes, but...in so many public libraries the paperwork involved in getting a card is surprisingly complicated. When I tried that field trip I found that the children (who don't customarily carry photo ids or, indeed, any sort of identification) were unable to use this wealth of resources. A teacher could not sign or vouch for them; only a parent. Although it is nice to demonstrate the existence of large collections, it is ultimately a frustrating experience for the child. And you cannot even enter some academic libraries in Maryland without a student id. What a shame!
