Sue,
Great ideas! I love the one-minute commercial idea. I do booktalks also but your idea sounds more interesting. When we do booktalks, I have the students give a brief summary without giving away the ending, tell whether they think the book is easy, medium, or hard and why, and rate it from 1 to 10. This usually takes about 5 minutes. I would like to shorten the time like you suggested. What do you have the students do in a minute? Could you describe it more specifically? Also, I have done your "Quick Read" idea but I call it
"teabag reading" as in dipping briefly into the book and then passing it on. My students really love this activity and it gets them excited to try some books they might otherwise have ignored.
