I too love Konigsburg and think we need a statue of her in every library, along with others like Katherine Paterson and Avi. Nevertheless, I have a dissenting opinion concerning The Outcasts .... I think that the book just does not measure up to Konigsburg's other novels. With The Mixed Up Files, and The View From Saturday, the relationships between the characters seemed organic, the events in the story seemed inevitable (while also appearing to be unlikey), and there was a delicious mystery and tension that held everything together. I thought that The Outcasts was a mechanical sort of book with some quirky, interesting characters, but it lacked the imagination and inspiration of Konigsburg's other books. I know that others think that it's a fine book, but for me it just didn't do the trick.
