Robin Edinger,
I'm a graduate student in the SOIS program at the University of Wisconsin -Milwaukee. I'm monitoring this discussion as part of my coursework.
I'm also a Mom and I consider myself lucky to have a second grader who is an advanced reader. In kindergarten and first grade he brought home reading books that were part of his required homework. He had to read each book THREE times out loud to us, before we could "sign off", that he had completed his homework. He hated that. He was so bored with the books. This year the teacher requires that they do 15 minutes of reading every night. The students gets to select what they read. Holy smokes, did that make a difference! Homework time is so much easier and fun, not painful like last year. We're all happier, and reading is fun again. He selects some of the books himself. I select some based on what I know he likes. However, when it comes to bedtime stories, I select what I will read aloud and then I try to take that opportunity to select what I consider to be good literature.
I'm enjoying monitoring the discussion on the AR (Accelerated Reader) Incentive Program. As a parent, SOIS student, and future media specialist, I find it very interesting.
Just my 2 cents, Tanya S. Misselt Assistant Reference Librarian - Appleton Public Library (Wisconsin)
