choosing books

The students in my class are heavily influenced by anything I read aloud. The library media specialist always tells us that she knows exactly what we are reading to our students because they all want to check that book out. I agree that Scholastic book orders as well as book fairs promote certain books and the students are drawn to them. My students all enjoy reading series books such as The Magic Tree House series, THe Boxcar Children, Flat Stanley and others. It is often frightening to me that we as teachers have that much influence over our students.
My own child is in the 4th grade and she likes to read problem novels, historical fiction and some fantasy such as Harry Potter, Dragon Rider etc. She is very interested in things that really happen to people and how they deal with their problems. Her teacher fosters such a love of reading because he allows them to share their books with the class in a creative way.
