One of the first books of E.L.Konigsburg I read was Jennifer, Hecate, Macbdth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth which I thoroughly enjoyed, having a good laugh throughout the book. Then, when I rea d it again, I noticed that, already in 1967 we had a story of an integrated friendship. There was no overt mention of that fact, just in the story and in the illustrations for anyone to see it. It was one of those things about her writing - the subtlety that hits you between the eyes or makes you laugh out loud.

When she was presented with the Regina Medal by the Catholic Library Association a few years ago, she had everyone in the audience in stitches in what chin hairs can teach us. She is, indeed, a rare person and still writing strong stories with that subtlety that brings you up short.
