Still More Teachers

I second Lauralyn Persson's recommendation of Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher and want to point out a few other titles that take the one-room school as their setting. Kirkpatrick Hill's lovely The Year of Ms. Agnes has already been mentioned, but can anyone forget the illiterate but highly effective school marm in Geraldine McCaughrean's Stop the Train? And how about the real-life teacher Christine Vest, in Delia Ray's debut novel Ghost Girl: A Blue Ridge Mountain Story? In each the teacher plays a pivotal role and brings the schoolhouse scenes to life.
