One of my favorite books, The Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill, reveals a caring and unconventional teacher of the late 1940's. She wears slacks, not dresses, and gives excitement and value to educational activities in her one room Alaskan schoolhouse. This would also be a great classroom read aloud!
