Maia, I sympathize with your desire to see books outside the "norm". Why do publishers publish so many books that focus on teachers, schools, etc? It's because the library/school market is the backbone of the children's publishing industry. Schools and library buy books. This very narrow market isn't just frustrating for folks like you; it drives me as a children's writer up the wall. If I don't please the adults that purchase books for kids/teens, then I don't get published. It's that--for me, heartbreakingly--simple.
