One of my favorite teachers is a character whose presence, while powerful, is only ever implied and never actually "seen" or heard from directly: Miss Stretchberry in Sharon Creech's "Love That Dog."
I'm always amazed when I think what a strong impression I have of Miss Stretchberry and then remember that as a reader I know her only through Jack's poems. And what an effect she has on his relationship to and feelings about poetry!
