Hi everyone - I'm new to this list, and very much enjoying the messages. I'll just say very briefly that my two favorite old classics with wonderful school scenes are
*The Secret Language* by Ursula Nordstrom and *Understood Betsy* by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. (Also Pippi Longstocking's subversive tactics...)
My sister home-schooled her two children until they reached high school age, and after that she ran a small alternative school in her house for a few years - and I know she was always fond of the account of the one-room schoolhouse in Understood Betsy.
