My favorite new book about a school is Edward Bloor's Story Time. Students at the Whitaker Magnet School get the highest standardized test scores in the country, but in return they have to 1) drink nasty protien shakes, 2) take all their classes in a windowless basement, and 3) do nothing but take practice tests all day, except when they are 4) showing off for visiting dignitaries. Also their school building, home of the "Leave No Gifted Child Behind" program, is possessed by demons. Definitely not a positive portrayal of a school environment, but it is a very funny, inventive book for middle schoolers.
