School

I have to throw my 2 cents in quickly before the month is over. I agree that the market seems to be flooded with books about school and teachers lately, and I too would love to see more books about homeschooling and alternative education. On the other hand, it is nice to see in many recent books the trend towards warm portrayals of school. As a child, I remember school being portrayed in books and TV as boring unfair and strict. The characters I remember were got in trouble for things they didn't do or discovered their teacher to be an evil alien. I'm sure that there were other more positive examples, but they don't stick out in my memory. It is a wonder I decided to become a teacher and continue going to school for the rest of my life. I wish that as a child I could have read books such as Kevin Henkes's Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, David Shannon's David Goes to School, or Julie Danneburg's First Year Letters, which all depict caring, creative, and fun teachers. Here are my top 6 favorite books about school. They all portray the type of teacher that I strive to be and the type of school that I wish all children could attend.
