I have been a fourth and/or fifth grade teacher for the past 9 years. I have loved the opportunity to read aloud every day, often extending the time well beyond the scheduled 15 minutes. That's what you can do when your class is self-contained. I have also scheduled 30P minutes a day for silent reading. I have had the same students for the past two years (fourth and fifth grade), and the kids have come to love and beg for these times.
Now I am moving up to sixth grade with these same kids. While I know they will read and love to read, I don't know when it will happen during the day. The upper-grades are departmentalized. I will teach a language arts block to to sixth grade classes. This includes reading, grammar, writing, vocabulary and spelling. For this I have 90 minutes. If I don't read aloud or give them time to silently read, they won't get it. It's not an otherwise scheduled part of the day. If anyone can give me some ideas on incorporating this into our day, I would be ever grateful.
Thanks, Brian
