Okay, I have to chime in here. We read to hear other voices. To hear stories told. The Teacher's Funeral is a cross-over book in the best sense. Yes it appropriate for the fourth graders, I am reading it aloud to them. It is also a terrific read for 5th and 6th graders who are fighting over copies for our mock Newbery. This book is laugh aloud funny yet speaks to the young adolencent in the character's longing to escape school and home for the adventures of the greater world. I would hope that it will not be dismissed by teachers and librarians of older teens as a "children's book" denying this age group the opportunity to embrace this family and its community.
