Greetings all, Some of my favorites, beyond those already mentioned, include:
Aliki (1998). Painted Words: Marianthe?s Story: One. Greenwillow Books. Herrera, J.F. (2000). Upside Down Boy, The/El Ni?o de Cabeza. Children?s Book Press. Jim?nez, F. (1998). La Mar?posa. Houghton Mifflin Company. [same title but available in Spanish or English] Lorbiecki, M. (1998) [illustrated by K.W. Popp]. Sister Anne?s Hands. NY: Dial Books for Kids. Medina, J. (1999). My Name Is Jorge On Both Sides of the River. Poems in English and Spanish. Wordsong/Boyds Mills Press. Rodr?guez, L. (1997). Am?rica Is Her Name. Curbstone Press. Rodr?guez, L. (1997). La Llaman Am?rica. Curbstone Press. Mora, P. (1999). The Rainbow Tulip. Viking. Mora, P. (1997). Tom?s and the Library Lady. Knopf. Mora, P. (1997). Tom?s y La Se?ora de La Biblioteca. Knopf.
I use all of these picture books both to read to school children and with my USF credential/graduate students as discussion starters about the role of teachers working with English Language Learners and with racial issues in the classroom. The majority of my USF students find the books very engaging and strong examples of books that deal with complex issues around being a teacher. Pat Mora's book, Tom?s and the Library Lady, is obviously not about a teacher, but highlights the important role that a librarian plays to spark the child's imagination and thus I use it in conjunction with the others.
