I remember my 5th grade teacher reading Charlotte's Web to the class. It was glorious because nobody had ever read a chapter book aloud to me before. I can still hear the voice she used for Templeton, the rat. Jean Witt are you out there?
I taught in a residential setting in Iowa for troubled boys a few years ago and I read out loud daily. It actually calmed the boys and improved their behavior. They laughed out loud as I read Richard Peck's A Long Way from Chicago. Another favorite for them was Holes.
